Hajj and Umrah are physically demanding acts of worship: long walks, crowds, hot weather and a changed sleep routine all come together. A little preparation helps you carry out your worship more comfortably.
See your doctor before you travel
- If you have a long-term condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes or a heart condition, have a check-up before travelling and share your travel plans with your doctor.
- The vaccinations Saudi Arabia requires for Hajj and Umrah can change over time; the meningococcal vaccine has long been among them. Ask your tour operator and health authorities about the current requirements.
Plan your medicines
- Take enough of your regular medicines for the whole trip, plus a few extra days.
- Carry them in their original packaging, with prescriptions, in your hand luggage.
Protect yourself from the heat
- Drink water little and often throughout the day, without waiting until you feel thirsty.
- Stay in the shade as much as possible when the sun is strongest.
- Light-coloured, breathable clothing is more comfortable in the heat.
Look after your feet
Walking several kilometres during tawaf and sa'i is normal. Prepare by walking regularly before you travel, break in new sandals or shoes in advance and keep plasters with you.
Stay healthy in the crowds
- Respiratory infections are common in crowded, air-conditioned places, so masks and hand hygiene are important.
- A light cardigan or shawl helps when moving between air-conditioned spaces and the heat outside.
Don't neglect rest
Plan your days of worship in a balanced way; enough sleep and regular meals help you stay well until the end of the journey.
