The most common problem when preparing for Umrah is forgetting something in the last-minute rush. We recommend going through the list below a few weeks before you travel, so you have time to fill any gaps. This is a general guide; always give priority to the information provided by your group or tour operator.

Documents

  • Passport and visa documents (check your passport's validity well in advance)
  • ID card, flight tickets and hotel details
  • The group card and contact details provided by your tour operator
  • Prescriptions for any medicines you take
  • Photocopies of important documents, or digital copies on your phone

Ihram and items for worship

  • At least two sets of ihram for men (one as a spare)
  • An ihram belt to hold the izar in place and carry money and cards
  • A lanyard card holder or a small Hajj and Umrah bag
  • A light, foldable prayer rug and a tasbih
  • A pocket-sized Qur'an or a book of supplications
  • A miswak

Clothing and footwear

  • For women: modest, comfortable and simple clothing, spare headscarves and a prayer dress
  • For men: comfortable clothes and a prayer cap for after you leave ihram
  • Slippers or sandals for ihram, and comfortable shoes you are used to for other times
  • A light cardigan or shawl for air-conditioned hotels, coaches and mosques

Toiletries

  • Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Unscented wet wipes and a small towel
  • An unscented cream for chafing during long walks

Health

  • Medicines you take regularly (enough for the whole trip plus a few extra days)
  • Painkillers, plasters and any basic medicines your doctor recommends
  • A few face masks for crowded places

Practical items

  • Phone charger, power bank and plug adaptor
  • A small cloth bag to carry your shoes with you in the mosque
  • Sunglasses
  • Spare room in your suitcase for gifts on the way back
