Prayer caps, prayer rugs and prayer beads are among the items used most during the journey and given most often as gifts afterwards. Choosing well makes them more comfortable to use and helps your gifts last longer.

Choosing a prayer cap

• When is it worn? Men do not cover their heads while in ihram; the prayer cap is worn after leaving ihram, during prayer and in daily life.
• Fabric: In a hot climate, breathable, finely knitted or cotton caps are more comfortable.
• Fit: A cap should not feel tight or leave a mark on the forehead. Try it on before buying if you can.
• As a gift: Simple colours such as white and cream suit almost everyone.

Choosing a prayer rug

• For travelling: A light, thin, foldable rug takes up little space in your bag and is easy to use at the hotel or on the move.
• For home: Thicker, softer rugs are kinder to the knees during long prayers.
• Size: Make sure the rug is long enough for your forehead and knees to stay on it in prostration.
• Care: Check the washing instructions and watch out for colours running in the first wash.

Choosing a tasbih

• Number of beads: Tasbihs with 33 or 99 beads are the most common. A 33-bead tasbih is easier to carry in a pocket.
• Material: Plastic and acrylic beads are light and durable, wooden beads feel warm in the hand, and stone beads are heavier with a more noticeable feel.
• String and tassel: A strong string keeps the tasbih from coming apart for a long time.
