Zamzam is the blessed water from the Zamzam well at the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, which pilgrims returning from Hajj or Umrah love to share with their families and friends. Knowing a few things before you travel makes it much easier to bring it home safely.

Carrying Zamzam on the plane

  • Rules for carrying Zamzam water vary by airline and airport; always check your airline's current rules before your flight.
  • Many airlines do not allow Zamzam water in checked luggage.
  • Official sealed Zamzam containers sold at the airport are usually accepted, though there may be a limit per passenger.
  • Putting bottles you have filled yourself in your suitcase may break the rules and can damage your belongings if they leak.

Storing it at home

  • Keep Zamzam in a cool place away from sunlight, in a closed container.
  • If you transfer it, use food-safe containers that have been washed and dried thoroughly.
  • Instead of opening a large container again and again, it is practical and hygienic to divide the water into small clean bottles.
  • Avoid touching the opening of the container with your hands when pouring.

Offering Zamzam to guests

  • Zamzam is usually served in small cups, often together with dates.
  • Dividing it into small bottles in advance, based on how many guests you expect, makes sharing easier.
  • Many people drink Zamzam facing the qibla, saying bismillah and making a supplication.
