What should I take with me for Umrah?
The essentials include your documents, ihram garments and an ihram belt for men, comfortable slippers or sandals, a lanyard card holder or small bag, unscented toiletries and any medicines you take regularly. You will find a detailed list in our Umrah checklist.
What is ihram?
Ihram is the state a pilgrim enters by making the intention for Hajj or Umrah and reciting the talbiyah, during which certain actions become temporarily forbidden. In everyday speech, the two white cloths men wear during this time are also called ihram. Read our ihram guide for more.
Is there a special ihram for women?
Women do not wear a special ihram garment as men do; modest, simple clothing serves as their ihram clothing. You can browse headscarves and prayer dresses in our shop. For detailed rules, we recommend asking the religious guide of your group.
When and where do pilgrims enter ihram?
Ihram is entered before crossing the boundaries known as miqat. Pilgrims travelling by air usually put on their ihram garments before the flight and make their intention on board, before reaching the miqat. In practice, it is best to follow the instructions of your group leaders.
Do I need an ihram belt?
It is not required, but it is very practical. It helps hold the izar in place, and its pockets let you carry money, cards and other small items safely.
What kind of slippers or sandals should I choose?
Choose a light, comfortable pair that holds your foot well for long walks and crowds. While in ihram, men usually prefer slippers or sandals that leave the top of the foot uncovered; follow the advice of your group's religious guide on this. We also recommend wearing new footwear for a few days before you travel.
Can I bring Zamzam water on the plane?
Rules vary by airline and airport. Many airlines do not allow Zamzam water in checked luggage and instead accept the official sealed Zamzam containers sold at the airport. Always check your airline's current rules before you fly. See our Zamzam article for more.
What are popular gifts after Hajj or Umrah?
Prayer beads, prayer rugs, prayer caps, miswak and Zamzam are among the most popular gifts. You can find a selection of these together in our shop.
