What does ihram mean?
Ihram is the state a pilgrim enters by making the intention for Hajj or Umrah and reciting the talbiyah. While in this state, certain actions that are normally permitted become temporarily forbidden. In everyday speech, the two white cloths men wear during this time are also called ihram.
Men's ihram: two pieces of cloth
Men's ihram consists of two unstitched pieces of cloth. The piece wrapped around the waist is called the izar, and the piece worn over the shoulders is the rida. White ihram garments made of towelling or cotton are the most common.
How to wear ihram
- Before entering ihram, wash and, if possible, perform ghusl (the full ritual bath).
- Wrap the izar around your waist so that it covers you from the navel to below the knees, then secure it by tucking it in at the waist or with an ihram belt.
- Place the rida over your shoulders to cover the upper body.
- If it is not a disliked time for prayer, pray two rak'ahs, then make your intention and recite the talbiyah.
During tawaf, men also commonly wear the rida so that it leaves the right shoulder uncovered (idtiba). Your group leader will remind you of details like this when the time comes.
Ihram for women
Women do not wear a special ihram garment as men do. Modest, simple and comfortable clothing serves as their ihram clothing. Many women choose light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes and comfortable headscarves during this time. For the rules concerning the face and hands while in ihram, we recommend asking your religious guide.
Things to keep in mind while in ihram
The prohibitions of ihram are explained in detail in the sources. The best-known ones are:
- Men must not wear stitched clothing or cover their heads
- Scented products such as perfume and scented soap must not be used
- Hair must not be cut or shaved, and nails must not be trimmed
- Arguments, quarrels and bad language should be avoided
For exceptions and for what to do if a mistake is made, always ask your religious guide.
Practical tips
- Take at least one spare set of ihram for washing and changing.
- Towelling ihram absorbs sweat well and is more opaque, while thin cotton ihram is lighter. Choose according to the season and what you are used to.
- An ihram belt stops the izar from slipping, and its pockets keep your small items close.
- Carry an unscented cream for chafing during long walks.
- Wear new sandals for a few days before travelling so your feet get used to them.
