A well-packed suitcase means you can find what you need throughout the journey and saves you from carrying unnecessary weight. For a detailed list of essentials, take a look at our Umrah checklist too.

First, check your baggage allowance

Find out your airline's and tour operator's baggage rules before you travel. Weigh your suitcase as you pack, and remember to leave room for gifts on the way back.

What goes in your hand luggage?

  • Passport, tickets and other documents
  • Medicines you take regularly, with their prescriptions
  • Phone, charger and power bank
  • For men, one set of ihram and an ihram belt (as you may enter ihram during the journey)
  • A change of clothes and unscented wet wipes

Follow airport rules on liquids; hand luggage usually allows only small containers.

Packing list for men

  • Two sets of ihram and an ihram belt
  • Slippers or sandals for ihram, and comfortable shoes for other times
  • A few sets of comfortable clothes and a prayer cap for after ihram
  • Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant
  • A lanyard card holder or a small Hajj and Umrah bag

Packing list for women

  • Modest, comfortable and simple clothing; light-coloured, breathable fabrics are more comfortable in the heat
  • Spare headscarves and underscarves
  • A prayer dress
  • Comfortable shoes and slippers
  • Unscented toiletries and a small handbag

Tips for organising your suitcase

  • Rolling your clothes saves space and reduces creasing.
  • Keep your ihram garments and prayer dress in separate cloth bags so they stay clean and are easy to find.
  • Place heavy items at the wheel end of the suitcase.
  • Attach a label with your name and group details.
