Umrah can be performed at different times of year, so it is important to consider the season when packing. The right clothing helps you worship in comfort and look after your health.
The climate in Makkah and Madinah
- In summer, daytime temperatures often rise above 40 °C and the sun is very strong.
- In winter, Makkah is generally mild, while Madinah can get cool, especially at night.
- Hotels, coaches and mosques are usually strongly air-conditioned, so there is a marked difference between the heat outside and the cool inside.
In summer
- Choose light-coloured, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen.
- Loose-fitting clothes are more comfortable in the heat.
- Bring sunglasses.
In winter
- Pack a light jacket or a warm cardigan, especially for Madinah.
- Dressing in layers makes it easier to adjust to temperature changes during the day.
Tips for men
- Choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothes for the times you are not in ihram.
- A prayer cap is a good choice for prayers and daily wear.
Tips for women
- Choose modest, loose-fitting and simple clothing; light colours are more comfortable in the warmer months.
- Take spare headscarves, underscarves and a prayer dress.
Shoes and sandals
- For ihram, choose light slippers or sandals that do not tire your feet.
- At other times, wear comfortable shoes you are already used to, and never wear new shoes for the first time on the journey.
- A small cloth bag is handy for carrying your shoes with you in the mosques.
